Everyone loves a bargain! Garage sale enthusiasts in Steinbach and surrounding communities can hardly wait for 'garage sale season' to begin.
A garage sale notice board is available on Elmdale Street (just east of the TG Smith Centre) for posting or viewing information about upcoming garage sales. This centralized location for advertisement of community garage sales is intended to replace the use of signs on boulevards, which are often distracting and dangerous for traffic reasons.
Please review the following information before hosting your own garage sale. Permits are not required for garage and craft sales in residential areas as long as the following requirements are met:
- No more than two (2) sales events are allowed on the premises in any calendar year.
- The duration of a sales event must not exceed four (4) consecutive days.
- Sales events must only occur during daylight hours.
- Signs advertising the sale must be placed no sooner than one day before the sale and must be removed at the end of the sale.
- Signs may be placed on private property with permission of the property owner.
- Signs are not permitted on city boulevards.
Remember, you are not exempt from parking laws when attending garage sales in Steinbach. Vehicles must be parked on the correct side of the street, and in the same direction as traffic. Violators will be ticketed by the City of Steinbach.
For more information, call (204) 326-9877 or e-mail info@steinbach.ca.
The Community Garden is a volunteer project, begun in cooperation with The City of Steinbach and Steinbach and Area Garden Club. Community gardening is an activity for persons of all ages and abilities. A plot of land is provided to interested gardeners at a small cost to help cover set-up, tools etc. Gardeners have access to water, composting bins, tools and information at each garden site. Gardeners are encouraged to grow vegetables, herbs and flowering plants. It is each gardener’s responsibility to maintain their plot and surrounding areas. Good environmental gardening practices are encouraged. Surplus produce should be shared.
To view a video of the Community Garden, click here.
The following guidelines are meant to ensure the continuing success and prosperity of the Community Garden, not to restrict the participants. Welcome aboard!
1. Garden plot fee is $21 annually, payable with registration. A wait list will be maintained.
2. The plot sizes may vary but should be approximately 200 sq ft. Plots are to be marked with four corner stakes that remain in place during the season.
3. Members are required to weed and maintain their beds as well as adjoining paths or areas. If you are going to be away, please notify a friend to take care of your plot.
4. Members who are able, are asked to participate in maintaining common areas of the garden, and may be asked to participate in work projects when required.
5. Use of chemical pesticides/herbicides/fertilizers is discouraged.
8. Please consider adjacent plots when choosing plants, eg plants not more than 3 ft tall.
9. No animals are allowed inside the gardens. Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
10. Water is provided and must be used with care. Please follow guidelines at the garden plot.
11. Tools are to be cleaned and returned to the storage shed and locked. Access to sheds and water will be arranged after registration.
11. Vandalism is to be reported to the garden contact person.
12. Plots need to be totally cleared at the end of the season.
13. Returning gardeners will be given the choice of returning to the same plot.
The garden plots are located on Elmdale Drive between Lumber and Barkman on City of Steinbach land.
To register for a plot fill out a registration form available at City of Steinbach or download and print the form below, attach the $21 registration fee by cheque made out to Ernie Klassen and return both to Steinbach City Hall, 225 Reimer Avenue, Steinbach, MB R5G 2J1.

Parties are always a highlight during the summer months. To help facilitate the fun safely, the City of Steinbach allows block parties on selected neighbourhood residential streets such as cul-de-sacs or non-through streets.
The person organizing the event must submit an application to the City at least two days in advance of the party date. The applicant is required to give their name, telephone number, address, desired location, date, and time of the proposed block party. If the location is approved, the resident will be furnished with sufficient approved traffic control barricades to restrict access at each street closure location. Block party requests are required at least two days in advance of the proposed date.
There are no application fees for block parties.
Residents may contact City Operations at (204) 346-6211 or by e-mail at ndyck@steinbach.ca.

The City of Steinbach strongly believes that City residents and City employees alike have a crucial role to play in keeping Steinbach an attractive and healthy community. This includes the creation and maintenance of green space in the City. For this reason, the City promotes the following Cost Sharing Programs.

Requests must include a plan for the tree planting, including location of curbs and boulevards, public sidewalks, private approaches, underground structures, above-ground structures, overhead wires, proposed location of trees, proposed species and planting size of trees.
Council will review requests at such time as the overall budget is being considered for the following year.
Cost-Sharing Maximum: The City will consider up to a maximum of $5,000 per annual budget for purposes of boulevard tree projects, cost-shared 50/50 with the landowner or neighbourhood.
The City will issue tax-deductible receipts for donations made to a tree-planting project approved by the City. Payment of the landowner portion is due prior to ordering of the trees.

It is important to dispose of expired or unsafe child car seats properly. To avoid safety or liability issues, do not drop-off or purchase used (and potentially expired) car seats privately or from thrift stores. There is no guarantee as to the car seat's level of safety when purchased second-hand.
If you have a car seat that has expired or is unsafe:
Bring it to the Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre, located at 930 St. Mary's Street in Winnipeg, for proper disposal.
You can also bring expired car seats to the Steinbach Landfill, 104 Hanover Road East, but be sure to notify the scale attendant so that the car seat can be set aside to be destroyed.
Why do car seats expire?
They are tested to ensure they meet certain standards for certain periods of time (i.e. pressure, temperature extremes, etc.). If you are caught with an expired car seat, there is a $292 fine.
