Task Forces & Special Projects
During the 2010 municipal election campaign, the issue of crime was raised as an area of concern by candidates and members of the general public. In order to property address this issue, a task force will examine ways to strengthen and improve the public safety of Steinbach citizens.
The Mayor’s Task Force on Public Safety has the following mandate:
· Review crime levels in Steinbach and identify key problem areas.
· Research current best practices of safety in other urban centres.
· Identify ways in which existing crime prevention and reduction tools can be strengthened.
· Evaluate the effectiveness of current police coverage in Steinbach and how it can be enhanced.
· Explore how to use urban design features (i.e. lighting, building layout, etc.) to assist in crime prevention.
The Chair of the task force shall submit a final report to Mayor Chris Goertzen by January 1, 2012.

The World Health Organization Global Age-Friendly Cities Project was launched in 2006 to address environmental and social factors that contribute to active and healthy aging. The Steinbach Age-Friendly Community Council was organized in 2010 to research, consult through individual interviews as well as community focus groups and make recommendations on eight priority areas: transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, community support and health services, and outdoor spaces and buildings.
• To provide advice, consultation and recommendations to the City of Steinbach on policies and issues related to creating an age-friendly environment.
• To develop and implement a realistic action plan for Steinbach based on the recommendations in the Steinbach Age Friendly Cities Report.
• To review and determine appropriate follow-up to issues brought to the attention of the Council by the Age Friendly Community Council members or community members at large.
• To facilitate discussion, focus groups and surveys with seniors regarding any outstanding issues related to the eight dimensions of healthy communities as outlined above and developed by the Age Friendly Communities initiative.
• To communicate with the City of Steinbach, the community at large and seniors about the activities of the Steinbach Age Friendly Community Council.
• To relay information to the City of Steinbach through the appointed Councillor and prepare reports that can be used by the City to address outstanding concerns to seniors, senior serving organizations and the community at large.
All Committee member terms are two year and begin on September 1st of each year. Board members are appointed by Steinbach City Council. There is no limit to the number of terms a member may serve with the exception of holding the position of Chairperson which is limited to two consecutive terms.
There are a maximum of fifteen (15) members that represent a cross-section of the community.

• Meeting 10 times per year as a committee to review progress and discuss issues.
• Utilizing a community assessment completed by the Centre on Aging, University of Manitoba and lisitening to current concerns of seniors, issues are prioritized on an ongoing basis.
• Forming sub-committees to take responsibility for researching, compiling data and preparing reports for the City of Steinbach.
• Communicating with exisitng community resources in their efforts to address concerns that will improve the quality of life for seniors in the community.
• Listening to the community at large about new and exisitng concerns as they may arise.
• Sharing information that may benefit the community from other sources - e.g. Centre on Aging, Manitoba Seniors Secretariat, Provincial and Federal Governments, private companies etc.
• Providing information through the media as may be required to assist seniors and the community deal with aging issues.
• Following up with the City of Steinbach on actions taken to address recommendations.
• Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month from Septmeber to June.
• In order for quorum to be met, a minimum of 51% of Committee members must be present.
• Committee members serve on a volunteer basis. They are eligible to be reimbursed for pre-approved expenses related to committee business.
The City of Steinbach has received an initial grant of $5,000.00 provided by the Province of Manitoba for the purpose of covering operational expenses.
The mission of the Steinbach Community Health Committee is to improve health care services provided within the city of Steinbach.
The Steinbach Community Health Committee is mandated to do the following:
1) Explore ways to increase the number of physicians who choose to practice within the City of Steinbach and retain the current doctors.
2) Advocate for the official recognition of Bethesda Hospital as the regional hospital for southeastern Manitoba.
3) Lobby for the expansion of Bethesda Hospital and the upgrading of its facilities or/and the creation of new facilities that would augment the services provided to the Steinbach region.
4) Support the South Eastman RHA in its efforts to lobby the provincial government for additional health care funding for southeastern Manitoba.

Steinbach City Council - 1
R.M. of Hanover resident - 1
Members at large - 1
The Committee is responsible for selecting its own executive on an annual basis at its September meeting. The members of the executive are: chair, vice-chair, and secretary/treasurer. The Mayor of Steinbach or delegated council representative shall preside over the annual election of the executive.
The chair is responsible for presiding over Committee meetings and acting as the official spokesperson for the Steinbach Community Health Committee with the media and outside agencies.
The vice-chair assumes all responsibilities of the chair in the absence of the chair.
The secretary/treasurer is responsible for taking meeting minutes and managing the finances of Steinbach Community Health Committee.
Meetings are held at the call of the chair and shall occur not less than eight (8) times in each calendar year.
In order for quorum to be met, a minimum of 65% of Committee members must be present. Members participating via teleconference are deemed to be present.
Committee members serve on a volunteer basis. They are eligible to be reimbursed for all expenses directly related to board business.
The City of Steinbach will provide an initial grant of $5,000.00 to the Steinbach Community Health Committee for the purpose of covering operational expenses.
